For my first film, I decided to watch Gladiator. This film was released in 2000 and directed by Ridley Scott. I asked both ChatGPT and Perplexity.ai to ‘Give me a summary of the film Gladiator”.
ChatGPT’s summary

Perplexity.ai’s summary

My Comparison

After watching the movie on Netflix and reading over both of the Generative AI’s summaries of the film, both of the sites provide an accurate summary of what took place in the film. Most of the major plot points, other than Maximus’s failed escape of the Gladiator cells before his battle with Emperor Commodus in the Colosseum, are included in their summaries. However, ChatGPT forgot to include a crucial point in the beginning of the film; when Emperor Marcus Aurelius asks for Maximus to succeed him as Emperor instead of his son. This is the driving cause for Commodus to murder his father and order the execution of Maximus. Other than that, both summaries are correct and informative.
Which Site’s Summary Was Better?
While both ChatGPT and Perplexity.ai provided accurate summaries, Perplexity.ai’s was more detailed. Not only did it include Marcus Aurelius’ request to Maximus and his resulting murder, it also provided sources and citations of where the information came from. This allows for the user to fact check the information provided, which is something that is vital when using AI to ensure that no fake facts were inserted to add more information. I believe that because of this and the fact that the summary included more important plot points, Perplexity.ai’s summary of the film was more accurate, informed and reputable.
